Jharkhand Literary Meet has become an integral part of Jharkhand’s annual cultural calendar in the five years of its existence. This year, Jharkhand Literary Meet is back in Ranchi to celebrate its fifth edition.

Jharkhand Literary Meet was launched in 2017 by Gameplan because Jharkhand needed a festival that would celebrate its rich, diverse yet underrepresented literature and culture. The idea was to take Jharkhand to a wider world audience and also to bring

From the very first year, the lit meet has drawn premier authors and speakers from across India, having hosted eminent delegates such as Ruskin Bond, Uday Prakash, Mridula Garg, Harivansh Narayan Singh, Sharmila Tagore, Pankaj Kapur, Mark Tully, Jairam Ramesh, Devdutt Pattanaik, Mahadev Toppo, Anuj Lugun, Usha Uthup and Rekha Bhardwaj among several others. The overwhelming response to the lit meet encourages us keep our emphasis on a consistently high quality of participants, and an inherent connection with the local cultural ethos.

Akshaya Mukul

Akshaya Mukul is the author of Gita Press and the Making of Hindu India (2015), which won every major non-fiction award in India on its release, including the Crossword Book Award, Ramnath Goenka Award, Tata Literature Live Award, Atta-Galatta Bangalore Literature Festival Prize and the Shakti Bhatt Award. Mukul is the recipient of the Homi Bhabha, Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund and the New India Foundation fellowships. He has contributed essays to Keywords for India: A Conceptual Lexicon for the 21st Century, edited by Rukmini Bhaya Nair and Peter Ronald deSouza, and A Functioning Anarchy? Essays for Ramachandra Guha, edited by Srinath Raghavan and Nandini Sundar. His latest book is a biography of the iconic Hindi writer Agyeya and is titled Writer, Rebel, Soldier, Lover:  The Many Lives of Agyeya (2022).

Alka Saraogi

Alka Saraogi is a Hindi author from Kolkata. Her first novel ‘Kalikatha via Bypass’ won the Sahitya Akedemi award in 2001. She has published six more novels. She is translated into many European languages like German, Italian, French and Spanish and regional languages of India.

Her new novel ‘Kulbhushan Ka Naam Darj Kijiye’ grapples with the theme of long displacement of people migrating to West Bengal between partition and the formation of Bangladesh.

Anuj Lugun

Anuj Lugun is a poet, short-story writer, song composer, novelist, playwright and essayist, but he is best known for his poems. His political and social justice activism has earned him the title of ‘Tribal Poet’.  Lugun’s writings explore themes such as love, freedom, revolution, and opposition to all types of bigotry. He received Bharat Bhushan Agarwal Award for his poem Aghoshit Ulgunan (Undeclared Uprising), and the Rashtriya Muktibodh Puraskara (Madhya Pradesh Sahitya Akademi).

Ashutosh Chaturvedi

Ashutosh Chaturvedi, Prabhat Khabar’s Editor-in-Chief, has 30 years of journalistic experience and has worked for the BBC for 8 years (3 years in London and 5 years in the Delhi office). He began his career as a trainee journalist at Maya before moving on to India Today, the Sunday Observer, Dainik Jagran, and the BBC.

Ashutosh  was also a crucial component of the BBC Hindi website’s launch team. He was in charge of the whole news operation and played a major part in the growth of the Amar Ujala Group.

Balaji Vittal

Balaji Vittal, a Jadavpur University Civil Engineering Graduate, is a second-generation Calcuttan. His co-authored bestseller, R.D. Burman: The Man, The Music, earned the President’s Swarn Kamal Award at the 2011 National Film Awards.

Gaata Rahe Mera Dil: 50 Classic Hindi Film Songs, their next book, won the Excellence in Writing on Cinema award at the 17th Mumbai Film Festival in 2015. Balaji writes as a freelancer for Ei Shomoy, Metro Plus (The Hindu), Scroll, Quint, and IBN Live.

Chandramohan Kisku is a well-known Hindi and Santhali writer and poet. His Hindi works have appeared in Kisad, Prabhat News, Contemporary Indian Literature, Tribal India, Vishwagatha, and Santhali writings in Sili, Chithi Sakam, Panja, Aiben Saakwa, Sandhayani, and Sahveed Adang.

Geetanjali Shree is the winner of the International Booker Prize 2022 for her novel Tomb Of Sand.

She is the author of three novels and several story collections, and her work has been translated into English, French, German, Serbian and Korean. She has received and been shortlisted for a number of awards and fellowships, and currently lives in New Delhi.

Gianluca Rubagotti

Gianluca Rubagotti is the Consul General of Italy in India. After studying International Law, and getting his Master’s Degree in Environmental Law from the University of Milan, he obtained a Ph.D. in International Economic Law from the Bocconi University of Milan. He has been a diplomat with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rome and has held postings in Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Singapore, Karachi and now Kolkata.

Javed Akhtar

Javed Akhtar is an Indian poet, lyricist, screenwriter and political activist. Known for his work in Hindi cinema, he has won five National Film Awards and received the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Padma Bhushan in 2007. He has won the National Film Award for Best Lyrics five times and the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist eight times.

Javed Akhtar is also a respected social commentator and activist. He has written a large number of poems against communalism, social injustice, National Integration and for Women’s Rights. Ministry of Human Resource Development has declared his song, beckoning the misguided youth to come forward and build the country, the National Anthem for Youth in 1995.

Javed Akhtar has been Nominated to Rajya Sabha as Member of Parliament by President of India 2010. He was the leading force behind the recently passed Copyright Amendment bill that restores dignity to lyrics and music composers and gives them what is rightfully theirs in terms of royalty.

Mahua Maji

Writer, politican and sociologist, Mahua Maji is a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India from Jharkhand as a member of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. She is the first woman from the state of Jharkhand to become a Rajya Sabha MP.

She was previously the Central President of the Women Wing of JMM and also the former Chairperson of the State Women Commission of Jharkhand.

Mihir Vatsa

Mihir Vatsa’s debut non-fiction Tales of Hazaribagh: An Intimate Exploration of Chhotanagpur Plateau won the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar in 2022. Presently, he is a PhD candidate at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Delhi, where he studies the narratives of Chhotanagpur’s landscape.

Former awards for writing include the Charles Wallace Fellowship at University of Stirling, the Srinivas Rayaprol Poetry Prize, and an award from Toto Funds the Arts, Bangalore.

Mungeswar Sahoo

Mungeswar Sahoo is a writer who works actively in the field of development. After completing his Masters in Political Science, he has been working as the Community Coordinator for Jharkhand State Livelihood Promotion Society, a nodal agency for effective implementation of livelihood promotion in the state as well as the implementation of the National Rural Livelihood Mission Project in the state of Jharkhand. He contributes articles and poems in Nagpuri (Sadri) regularly to Prabhat Khabar.

Niranjan Kujur

A Cinema Graduate from Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata, Niranjan is a multi-lingual film director who has made films in Kudukh, Santhali, Bengali, Hindi and Mandarin Chinese. 

His film EDPA KANA (GOING HOME) won the National Film Award for Best Audiography (Non-feature) in 2016, IDPA Award at Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) organised by Films Division, and Special Jury Mention at International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK) in 2015. The film also travelled to ISFVF held at Beijing Film Academy, China, the same year.

PAHADA and EDPA KANA are two of his films that were selected for the Indian Panorama (Non-feature) of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in its 44th and 47th editions, respectively. His Santhali Video on Adivasi women’s plight in the adivasi society, DIBI DURGA, traveled to Bangladesh and Malaysia in 2019.

The Netflix series, JAMTARA, had him as a Line Producer for the Jamtara schedule. He has directed a number of digital ad films for brands like Dabur, ITC and Springfit, working with the production company ICE Media Lab and Analytics in 2021-22.

Amir, his International co-production with Haftix Films, was selected for the “Hub of Asia” section at the 39th Busan International Short Film Festival, South Korea, 2022. His latest directorial TEERE BENDHO NA.. (UNANCHORED) was selected in competition on the 14th IDSFFK, 2022. Niranjan has also completed serving as Assistant Professor (contractual) in Direction and Screenplay Writing department of SRFTI in September 2022.

Parthiv Dhar

Parthiv Dhar is a typical 70’s edition from Shillong , brought up in Guwahati. He is an alumni of KV , Khanapara, Guwahati and VRCE Nagpur (renamed VNIT). After successful stints with a couple of MNC’s, he shifted to Indian Oil in 1999 and since then has gained appreciable experience in supply chain management, operations, sales and infrastructure development . He is also a Certified Petroleum Manager.

One of his biggest professional achievements was his inspiring leadership in ensuring uninterrupted supplies of LPG to households in Assam 24×7 during the first phase of COVID 19, earning accolades all round.

When he is not listening to Kishore Kumar, he researches on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and plans to bring out the real contribution of India’s liberator in India’s fight for independence through his proposed book for children. His blogs on Netaji are amongst the popular once read in India 

Kishore Kumar-The Ultimate Biography is his first book partnered with close friend Anirudha Bhattacharjee.

Poonam Saxena

Poonam Saxena is a journalist, writer, author and translator. She launched Brunch, the Sunday magazine of the Hindustan Times and edited it for 12 years. Subsequently, she was the editor of the newspaper’s weekend section. She writes a regular column for the Hindustan Times, titled The Way We Were, centered around Hindi literature and Hindi cinema.

She has translated Dharamvir Bharati’s classic 1949 Hindi novel Gunahon Ka Devta into English (Chander & Sudha, Penguin Viking) as well as Rahi Masoom Raza’s darkly funny novel about the Hindi film industry of the 1970s, Scene : 75 (HarperCollins). She has also selected and translated 25 stories for The Greatest Hindi Stories Ever Told (Aleph). She was the co-author of filmmaker Karan Johar’s memoir An Unsuitable Boy (Penguin).

He holds masters in Science from DSPMU, Ranchi and Bachelor in education from Central University of Jharkhand. Now a days he is in the final stage of Nagpuri feature film ‘Dahleez’. He is already get international acclaimed from his short film ‘Bandha Khet’. This film is highlighting the dark side of our farmers.

He born and bought up at Jaldega, Simdega surrounded with tribal-regional culture and traditions. He has strong hands on Tribal-Sadan literature. He got many awards and certificates for his intense work in the field of regional cinema and theatre. In 2022 he got the golden opportunity to travel South Korea and New Zealand to represent his film.

Rachana Yadav

Rachana Yadav belongs to a family where Indian Culture has always been patronized and promoted. She is the daughter of Smt Mannu Bhandari and Shri Rajendra Yadav , two of the most eminent names in the world of Hindi Literature. From them she imbibed a keen interest in art. Today, Rachana follows two full time paths. By profession she is a Kathak performer a choreographer and a teacher. She is actively performing and has presented her solo and group choreographic works in some of the major dance festivals in India as well as internationally. She is the Artistic Director of her institute in Gurugram by the name of ‘The Rachana Yadav Kathak Studio’, where more than 50 students are being trained at any given point and new choreographic work is always under progress.

In 2013, following the passing of her father Rajendra Yadav, celebrated Hindi author and editor, Rachana took over as the Publisher & Managing Director of Hans – the largest Hindi literary magazine in India, with a wide and diverse readership. Started by none other than the legendary Hindi author Premchand (1930), and revived by Rajendra Ji ( 1986), Hans is not a mere magazine but an institution which has defined the trends in the field of Hindi literature. Rachana strives to ensure a continuous publication of Hans, with the objective of heralding its leading position as well as increasing its reader base. And to ensure that the contribution of Hans continues to be as valuable and more in the field of Hindi literature.

With her classical dance training and a literary background, Rachana tends to marry these two at times. Her choreographies use contemporary literary themes which are projected through dance. She tends to use poetry by Famous Indian poets and also writes poetry for her choreographies . This has created a distinct identity for her work. It has been critically acclaimed and has got recognition for this exclusive niche that it enjoys now.

Rajat Kapoor

Rajat Kapoor is a versatile actor, writer and director. Kapoor started with acting in parallel cinema making his debut in the 1989 Kumar Shahani film Khayal Gatha. Later he began writing and directing. His directorial debut was the movie Private Detective: Two Plus Two Plus One (1997).

In 2001, Kapoor got his big mainstream break in Dil Chahta Hai. Since then, he has written, directed and appeared in many critically acclaimed films including Corporate, Bheja Fry, Siddharth: The Prisoner, Iti Mrinilani (Bengali Film) and also as Muhammad Ali Jinnah in a UK television film The Last Days of the Raj in 2007.

In 2003, he wrote and directed the independent film Raghu Romeo which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. Kapoor has two more National Awards to his credit, first for non-feature documentary, Tarana, then for his short, Hypnothesis.

RJ Arvind

RJ Arvind has more than 17 years of broadcast experience and has worked with multiple radio stations in Kolkata. He eats, lives and breathes  films and music, particularly from the retro era. His passion inspired him to set up three retro stations in Eastern India.

Saurabh Kirpal

After studying physics at St Stephens College in Delhi, Saurabh Kirpal read law at the University of Oxford and did his Masters in law at the University of Cambridge. He did a brief stint working with the United Nations in Geneva before returning to Delhi. There he has been practicing at the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court and was designated as a Senior Advocate in 2020 by a unanimous Court.

He has appeared in a range of matters covering a diverse range of subjects from commercial to constitutional law. This is reflected in the variety of clients he has appeared for – from Anil Ambani in his legal battle with his brother to being the counsel for Navtej Johar, Ritu Dalmia and others in the case that led to the reading down of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. He is presently fighting the case seeking recognition of same sex marriage before the Delhi High Court. A self-described ‘accidental activist’ he also is the managing trustee of the Naz Foundation Trust, the NGO that first fought for decriminalization of homosexuality in India. He is editor ‘Sex and the Supreme Court’, an anthology about issues relating to law, gender and sexuality as well as the recent book ‘Fifteen judgments: Cases that shaped India’s financial landscape.’

Sudha Arora

Sudha Arora, a feminist fiction writer, poet, activist and journalist, is a gold medallist from Calcutta University.

A lecturer in Jogmaya Devi college, and Shikshayatan College, Calcutta from 1968-1971, she has been associated with women counselling centers after moving to Mumbai in 1992.

Best known for her book Ek Aurat Ki Notebook and Kam Se Kam Ek Darwaza, she is the author of fourteen short-stories collections, two poetry collections, a novel and three books of articles on women’s issues. Her work has been translated into other languages and adapted for television, stage and films.

Sujata

From starting Hindi’s first feminist blog ‘Chokher Bali‘ to feminist discussion on theoretical  writings, Sujata has come a long way. Her collection of poems called ‘Antim Maun Ke Beech‘ and a novel ‘ Ek Bata Do‘ have been published. Apart from two books on feminism ‘Stree Nirmiti‘ and ‘Duniya Mein Aurat‘, she has also published ‘Aalochana Ka Stree Paksh. She has received several awards for her poetry.

At present, she is an associate professor at Delhi University.

Vinay Pathak

Vinay Pathak is an Indian actor who has starred in many films including Khosla Ka Ghosla, Bheja Fry, Island City and Johnny Gaddaar and had a supporting role in high profile movies like Jism and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. The comedies Khosla Ka Ghosla and Bheja Fry came his way while he was studying at State University of New York at Stony Brook. In 1999, he played the role of Vinny in the television series Hip Hip Hurray.

He also produced the film Dasvidaniya, which told the story of a common man bidding farewell before dying. Along with good friend Ranvir Shorey, he anchored the show Oye. Together they hosted the talk show Ranvir Vinay Aur Kaun? He also teamed up with his friends Ranvir, Suresh Menon, and Gaurav Gera to be a part of a gag-based show The Great Indian Comedy Show.

Yatish Kumar has made a special creative presence in the literary world in the last few years. His poetic reviews on popular novels, stories and travelogues have particularly attracted the attention of readers. His poems and memoirs have been published in most of the reputed magazines such as Naya GyanodayaHansAha! ZindagiSanmargPrabhat Khabar and Vagarth. His works are also published on famous literary blogs like SamalochanJanaki PulPahleebarKavita Kosh etc. He is also actively associated with various literary-social organizations and is the president of Kolkata’s literary organisation ‘Neelamber’ these days. Yatish Kumar has always been at the forefront in supporting various social upliftment programs.

Recently, his first Hindi poetry book Antas Ki Khurchan has been published, to appreciation from the readers and litterateurs. An Administrative Officer of the Indian Railway Service, Yatish Kumar has the distinction of becoming the youngest Chairman and Managing Director of Central ‘Public Sector Undertakings’. He is currently holding the charge of Braithwaite & Company Limited. Shri Kumar was honoured with National Award in 2006 for outstanding contribution in Indian Railways.
